If a hunter tries to chase 2 rabbits, both will escape - Ancient Chinese Proverb
I'm reading a book by Gary Keller (of Keller Williams Realty) and it's a fascinating read and one I'd highly
recommend. In his book, he tells of a scene from the movie, City Slickers. In the scene, Curly, who is played by Jack Palance is with Mitch, played by Billy Crystal. They were riding looking for stray cattle and talking about life. Here is the exchange between the two:
Curly: Do you know what the secret of life?
Curly: This (he then holds up one finger).
Mitch: Your finger?
Curly: One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and everything else doesn't mean anything (I cleaned that up).
Mitch: That's great, but what's the one thing?
Curly: That's what you've got to figure out.
In my life, I have been guilty of chasing two rabbits and catching neither. This is evidenced by the fact that I have held a number of jobs in recent years. Each time that I got "settled" in, I would go chasing that other rabbit. The result was I would leave behind a customer base that was used to where I was. More importantly, I would have to learn a new system all over again. I would be back at square one with nothing to show for it. This lack of focus created turmoil in my marriage and provided an unfavorable example for my children to follow.
I have now learned that focusing on one rabbit leads to a higher probability of success in your chosen endeavor. I have a good friend that is Exhibit A of what's it's like to concentrate your efforts in one area. I have long admired his track record of success that he has experienced in his career. I'm even more impressed that he grasped this concept early on and has become a great manager of people by teaching them this concept. I'm even more excited that we will have him as a resource and a contributor to this effort to help men unlock the power within themselves. Be on the lookout in the near future for pearls of wisdom from him and other men who have graciously agreed to be a part of this.
